ku`u one hānau
... me Makani Yogi ...

Ke helele'inei ke kili Maluko'i me ke kani o nā manu mele.
The gentle Maluko`i rain scatters with the sound of the songbirds.

E ho'olohe...he mau mo'olelo kō lākou e `ōlelo ai...nā ka'ao o ka wā kahiko, nā mo`olelo hou.
Listen... they have stories to tell...tales of ancient times,(as well as) the new stories.

`O wai kēia `āina i puni `ia e ka nani?
What is this place surrounded by such beauty?

He wahi me nā kuahiwi uluwehi...uluāhewa `ia elā`au...me nā wailele huna...a me nā kahawai. `O kēia ku`u one hānau `o Waihe'e.
A place with lush mountain...crowded by plants...with hidden water fall... and streams. This is my birth place Waihe`e.

Aia `o Waihe'e ma waena o Kahalu`u a me Ka'alaea ma Ko`olaupoko i O`ahu i Hawai'i. Waihe'e is located between Kahalu`u and Ka`alaea in the district of Ko`olaupo on O`ahu, Hawaii.

He awāwa iki ia...a no ka nui `ole ona, poina `ia ka inoa pololei e ka hapa nui o nā po'e i nēia manawa, me ke kapa hewa `ia `ana i ia i ka inoa 'o Kahalu'u.
It is a small valley...and because of its size, the true name of this ahupua`a is forgotten by most people today, who mistakenly refer to this as part of Kahalu`u.

Pehea i loa'a ai kona inoa? He aha ka mana'o o Waihe'e?
How did its name come to be? What is the meaning of Waihe'e ?

Wahi a ke ka'ao, ua noho kekahi kupua ma nā mokupuni, nona ka inoa 'o Ke-aka-o-Kū.
According to legend, there once existed in the, a demigod named Ke-aka-o-Kū.

I konae kamali'i ana i lilo ai kona leo iāia; he mea mumule 'o ia.
During his childhood, he had lost his voice; He was a mute.

Ua 'ōlelo 'ia... hiki ke loa'a hou iāia kona leo inā hele 'o ia i Kahiki e male ai.
It had been said...that he could obtain his voice once again if he went to Tahiti to be married.

Oiai 'o ia i holo ana i Kahiki...ua pu'e kekahi he'e nui iāia a me kona wa'a.
While sailing to Tahiti...a giant squid attacked him and his canoe.

Ma hape o ke kaua lō'ihi, na Ke-aka-o-Kū i lanakila.Ā laila... nou akula 'ia ka he'e make i Hawai'i me ke kau 'ana i ke ahupua'a 'o Kahalu'u.
After a long battle...Ke-aka-o-Kū was victorious.Then...the dead squid was thrown towards Hawai`i and landed in the ahupua`a of Kahalu`u

Kahe akula ke kūkaeuli o ka he'e ma ka 'āina... me ke kulu 'ana i ke awāwa a'e...Ke awāwa i kapa 'ia nei 'o Waihe'e.
The squid's fluids and ink flowed across the land...and leaked over into the valley...The valley known today Waihe'e(Squid liquid).

And it is here...that my great-grandparents moved to from the ahupua`a of 'Aiea in the district of `Ewa in the year 1918.

A 'O kēia ka hale o ko'u kūpuna i kūkulu 'ia i ka makahiki 'umikūmāiwakanaonokūmākolu.
A me ko'u hale i kūkulu 'ia e ko'u makuakāne.
And this is the house of my elders built in the year 1963.
And* as well as my house built by my father.

Nui ka wai ma ka wahi o ko'u 'ohana... kahe nā kahawai he 'elua ma 'ane'i...Mai ke awāwa 'o Waihe'e kekahi, a mai ke ahupua'a 'o Ka'alaea ka 'ē a'e.
Water is abundant at the family residence...Two streams flow here...one from Waihe`e vally, and the other from the ahupua`a of Ka'alaea

A ho'ohui kēia mau kahawai ma ka hale pā o ko'u 'ohana. Ho'okahi puna ma 'ane'i e kahe ana i nā kahawai.
And these two streems meet in the garden of my family.
There is also a fresh water spring here that flows in to the streams.

I ka wā ma mua, i kanu ai ko'u kūpuna kuakahi i ke kalo ma`ane`i...akā na`e, kāka`ikahi ia i nēia manawa. I kēia mau lā, 'o ke kī ka mea nui me nā 'awapuhi like 'ole, ka 'ōhi'a `ai, ka mai'a, a me nā pua he nui `ē a`e.
In the earlier time , my great-grandparents planted taro here...however,it`s quite rare today. These days, there are mostly ti with various gingers,'ōhi'a 'ai* mountain apple, Banana, and many kinds of other flowers.

No ke ahupua'a 'o Waihe'e mai kēia mau mea āpau.
All of these things belong to the ahupua`a of Waihe`e.

'O kēia
ku'u one hānau...
This
is my birth place.
